reuse-key-on-new-luks-device v0.3 [20 Sep 2018] - by Dominic

Description

reuse-key-on-new-luks-device.sh is a way to re-use the key already used on one LUKS-encrypted partition on another. The idea is that more than one encrypted partition (even on different drives) can then be accessed, and even used as a single root logical volume (LV), after you enter the password once at boot time.

If the 'new' to-be-encrypted partition is not already LUKS-formatted, reuse-key-on-new-luks-device.sh will do this first: in this case you will be prompted before it continues, as any existing data on the device will be lost by the formatting operation.

If there is presently only one encrypted device on the machine, the source device is located automatically; otherwise it can be specified with option -s.

Usage

./reuse-key-on-new-luks-device.sh [options] device_to_be_encrypted

Example

./reuse-key-on-new-luks-device.sh /dev/sdb1

Options

-h - show this help and exit
-l - show changelog and exit
-s {device} - specify name of LUKS device from which the key is to be copied e.g. sda1 [optional]

Changelog

0.3 [20 Sep 2018] - after tweaking and testing
0.2 [17 Sep 2018] - add capability to format a new LUKS device
0.1 [14 Sep 2018] - initial version

Here is a selection of some (other) programs I have written, most of which run from the command line (CLI), are freely available and can be obtained by clicking on the links. Dependencies are shown and while in most cases written for a conventional Linux server, they should run even on a Raspberry Pi, and many can run under Windows using Cygwin. Email me if you have problems or questions, or if you think I could help with a programming requirement.
